How can I password protect my website?

This article explains how secure your website using a password protected directory.

This article applies to Unix Shared Hosting and Unix Reseller accounts and Unix Dedicated Servers.

Login to your Donhost control panel.

Browse to the Security page for the desired account.

To protect a directory click New Password Protected Directory.

Select the radio button corresponding to the directory you wish to protect and click Set-up Password Protection.

On the resulting page, the current directories on which password protection has been enabled will be displayed.

Please note: You must create a directory in your web space using FTP before you can protect it.

Click the Passwords link corresponding to the correct directory.

Click Add User.


On the resulting page you will have the opportunity to specify a username and password that will be required in order to access the password protected directory.

Enter the desired username and password in the text fields provided and click Add User.

Please note: Password protection is recursive, meaning that protecting a directory also protects any directories within it.
